Frantastic McGinn cruises to victory

FRANCIS McGinn was in top form at Ballycastle Golf Club on Saturday as he cruised to victory in the Peter Lamont Trophy with a stunning nett 65.

Club Champion Francis, playing off two, mastered the difficult wet and windy conditions superbly to complete the course in 67 shots for a four stroke winning margin.

Edgar Dornan, who becomes Captain of Ballycastle Golf Club on Friday, started his momentous week in fine style by taking second place in the Peter Lamont Trophy with a nett 69. Michael Page finished third and Owen McFadden fourth after they both posted nett 69’s and David Getty took fifth place with a nett 70.

The day’s gross prizes went to Owen Kennedy and Danny Taggart with gross scores of 75 and 76 respectively.

Saturday proved to be an excellent day for the Dornan household with Eamon also wrapping up the club’s Golfer of the Year title for 2010.

The year began with Eamon winning the Winter League individual title and his good form continued throughout a season that saw him reduce his handicap from thirteen to eight!

The Stableford competition held on Sunday was won by Lawrence McQuillan with a total of 43 points. Harry Sheehan was second with 41 points, Raymond Brown third with 38 points and Gerard Dowds fourth, also with 38 points.

A Midweek Open Stableford will be held at the club throughout the year and last Wednesday’s competition was won by John Morgan, ahead of Gerry McConville and Tony Connolly after all three finished with 36 points.

A Gents Fourball Betterball competition takes place at the club next Saturday with a Stableford scheduled for Sunday.

The weekend of 2nd and 3rd October sees the start of the Turkey Season at Ballycastle.

As in previous years, the Saturday and Sunday stableford competitions will be separate and split into two sections for handicaps (0-13) and (14-28) with the winners receiving a temporary handicap cut of one and two shots respectively. Original handicaps will be restored for the Bonanza Weekend which this year takes place on 11th and 12th December.

This year, there will also be a separate Ringer competition on Saturday and another on Sunday. Further details can be found on the competition noticeboard.
