Freddie shows nerves of Steele to win Straghan Cup

Freddie Steele was the winner of Banbridge Angling Club's Straghan Cup on Saturday.

The members headed off to Lough Melvin for the club’s annual outing.

Conditions on the lough were very difficult for angling with calm water and bright sunshine though the Banbridge men did have some broken cloud at times.

Lough Melvin needs a decent wave for it to fish at its best so in the conditions, it is no surprise that very few fish were weighed in.

Freddy Steele amazed the others with his ability to rise fish while most struggled. Fred could have had eight or nine fish if the ones he rose had stayed attached to his fly.

Marty Dynes had the heaviest fish of the day but it was a Pperch and despite Marty offering to paint red spots on his perch, it had to be discounted from the results.

RESULTS

Winner: Freddie Steele 0.680 kgs

Second: Joe Curran 0.642 kgs

Third: Ned Shannon 0.590 kgs.

The next competition is the Boat Anglers Cup & Wardsworth Bethel Cup (Juv on the Corbet Lough Friday 24th and Saturday 25th June, fishing from 6.30pm to 10.30pm. Fly fishing only. Entries are now closed for this competition.

Friday 3rd June saw the latest adult club competition on the Corbet Lough for the Patsy McGivern Shield.

The fishing took place from 6.30pm with the weigh in at 11pm. As the evening progressed and the sun started to set, the fishing improved with Colin Crothers getting eight fish for the night.

That wily old angler Jim Warren didn’t bother waiting for the sun to set as he bagged the winning fish at 7.50pm.

RESULTS

Winner: Jim Warren 0.878 kg

Second: Paddy Burns 0.804 kg

Third: Paddy Burns Jnr 0.710kg.
