Free kick earns U16s victory

BANBRIDGE scraped through this encounter but the win elevates them into joint second place in the league table with two matches to go.

The locals struggled to play with any rhythm or composure at the start and created very few chances and it wasn’t until 20 minutes into the first half that Josh Buchanan took a free kick out on the left and played a lovely low ball through to Finn Campbell who cooly slipped it past the keeper for the Juniors to go one up.

In the second half it was a fairly even contest although goalkeeper William Maxwell had to make a couple of excellent saves to keep Banbridge ahead.

At the other end Stephen McCavitt was unlucky on two occasions when he broke through and tucked the ball past the advancing keeper only to see both efforts run inches past the post.

Shortly after Solway were awarded a penalty which they converted to draw level. Just as it was looking as if the points would be split Lee Close took a direct frree kick on the left and floated it across to the far goalpost where Ryan Williamson couldn’t quite make contact with his head but the ball curled round just inside the far post to give Banbridge the winner.

Town will be hoping to repeat the victory in two days time when they face Solway again.
