Friendly opener to season

Last Saturday afternoon Lurgan’s senior team travelled to Portadown to play its A’s in the traditional pre-season friendly while the B team met Portadown B on the Park Green.

The weather was good but that was not the case for the Lurgan teams who were on the losing end of stiff opposition.

Portadown A led throughout the match against Lurgan A but only two of the Lurgan rinks were up to the challenge with Alan Robert’s rink working hard to gain a 16- 13 win over Aidan Corrigan’s men and Harry’s Cosgrove’s eventually finishing all square at 15-15 against Maurice Whitla’s rink. However the Portadown side remained confident and won the match 81-64.

Lurgan B struggled against a dominant Portadown B side and was 21 shots down at the midpoint. Things were looking bleak for Bobby Jones’ rink who were 10 shots adrift after 14 ends but they finished strongly by taking 6 of the last 7 ends to win 22-20. Sam Neill’s and Eamonn Quinn’s rinks also fought back well but lost narrowly by dropping vital shots on their final end. The visitors won by 17 shots.

The NIBA League programme gets underway on Saturday with the A Team at home in their Division 2 match against Rathfriland; while the B Team meets Portadown B away in its first Division 5 game.
