Fun Run continues to prove popular

YEAR on year the Tesco Waterside Half Marathon welcomes seasoned competitors to take part in the 13.1 mile event.

However for those looking to soak up the sporting atmosphere on Sunday, September 12, while having a bit of fun in the process, the 'Fun Run' is the ideal opportunity to those looking for the more laid back approach to participating in one of the North West's biggest sporting occasions.

The 3km stretch within the grounds of Gransha Grounds allows participants of all ages and capabilities to exercise those limbs and enjoy all the fun activities that have been planned as part of the day.

Organisers have also note an increase in those participants wearing fancy dress, which has helped build on the fun atmosphere.

Mayor Councillor Colum Eastwood said that the Fun Run is always a great family occasion.

"Over the last 29 years the Half Marathon has attracted the elite of local and national distance running talent. The Fun Run element of the event's programme helps to make the event an inclusive affair, ensuring that you don't have to be a seasoned runner to take part in the day."

"The race has become particularly popular with children, who are delighted to receive the ribboned medal that is awarded to anybody who completes the course."

A range of activities has been planned for the family day out including puppet shows, face painting and balloon modeling.

And there's an extra incentive for schools this year with the school providing the most participants receiving 10,000 Tesco Vouchers for Schools.

Registration for the fun run costs 3/5 euros per entry and includes a goody bag that is also handed out at the finish line, filled with treats and eats plus a drink.

The race also provides participants with the opportunity to raise some cash for a charity of their choice. HURT and the Foyle Branch of Parkinsons Disease NI are the official charities being supported by this year's half marathon but each individual can choose to support any charity they want. Every application pack comes with a sponsorship form that can be filled in at the discretion of the runner.
