Future now looks even brighter for local Bowling Club

Unfortunately with time, the quality of the lights deteriorated and the Club had to look at the possibility of upgrading their floodlights however the prohibitive cost made any such project a non starter.

A small committee comprising of George Graham (President), John Coulter (Immediate Past President), Joe McKeown (Secretary), Arnold Kenny (Treasurer) along with Club members Nigel McFadden and Derek Greer was set up to investigate the possibility of obtaining outside funding and an application was eventually submitted to Ballymena Borough Council under their ‘Enabling Scheme – Community Capital Grants Programme’.

The application was successful and the Club would like to acknowledge the help of Rosemary McCormick, Marie Glass, Clifford McDonald and Mrs Audrey Wales (Mayor) from Ballymena Borough Council in the application process.

Last Friday night saw the official ‘switch on’ of the new lights and George Graham (Club President) was delighted to welcome Mrs Audrey Wales (Mayor, Ballymena Borough Council) to perform the duties.

A small plaque was unveiled in the clubrooms to mark the occasion, followed by a small buffet which had kindly been provided by some of the ladies of the Club.

Club President, George Graham said: “I am extremely grateful to Ballymena Council for the award of funding from the Enabling Communities Scheme to help further develop lawn bowls in Ballymena.

These fantastic new lights will help us to attract International competitions to our green in the near future and the club is also embarking on a campaign to attract more young players to take up the sport.”
