Garvey 3’s Progress in McClements Cup Derby

LISNAGARVEY Thirds played Lisnagarvey Fourths in the second round of the McClements Cup.

The game got off to the worst possible start for the Fourths with a very early goal conceded to a well-placed deflection by Ryan Kee after just three minutes. Pako Pim picked up a good square pass outside the 25 metre line, delivered the ball hard and flat into the circle where it was met by Kee as he peeled away from his marker.

The Fourths were playing a high tempo defence with Aaron Martin standing out for both his work rate and clever running. The Fourths had a few chances of their own but were unable to capitalise.

The second half was more open with both sides contributing to a fast passing game with a feature being the amount of breakdown tackling in midfield.

Unfortunately another defensive lapse was to cost the Fourths the second goal as Sean Murray was allowed to break down the left and somehow managed to come out with the ball despite the attention of several defenders and it appeared he had been dispossessed.

Murray managed to offload to a well-placed Daniel Nelson in the circle and Nelson’s intelligent cross goal pass was met by the sliding Glenn Halliday to make the score 2-0.

The Fourths’ head did not go down and had agilt edged chance of their own late in the game when a hard through ball found Ross Martin unmarked in the circle. Martin composed himself and got his shot away but a high quality save by Luke Campbell at point blank range denied the Fourths even this consolation and the Thirds, who now play Raphoe, went on to close the game out with a 2-0 victory.
