Garvey Fifths come up short

Garvey Men’s Fifths played Instonians Thirds this past Saturday at Comber Road and ended up on the wrong side of a 3-2 score line.

The match was fairly even with the Instonian’s goalkeeper making a series of important saves throughout the game.

Instonian’s took a 1-0 lead through a well worked move down their right with a neat pull back and finish.

A penetrating run by Paul Campton shortly afterwards led to the ball finding its way to Darren Scott in the Instonian’s circle who swivelled and placed his shot into the bottom corner for 1-1.

Garvey had a couple of other good chances but couldn’t get the ball past the in-form Instonians keeper.

Just before the half time break, Instonian’s picked off a pass deep in the Garvey defence and converted well for a 2-1 interval lead.

Garvey had long spells of domination in the second half and again created a series of good chances without any reward until Peter Richardson coolly finished from a switched short corner to level the match at 2-2.

The match was now finely poised with Garvey subsequently hitting the post and also had a good shout for a penalty stroke denied.

The home sides hopes were finally dashed when an Instonian’s short corner squirmed through the Garvey defence for a 3-2 lead in the final few minutes.

The match finished with Garvey pressing hard for an equaliser and it was a disappointing loss given the amount of possession and chances created. Thanks again to Brendan Kelly for umpiring.

Elsewhere, the Ladies Firsts bowed out of this season’s Senior Cup. An early goal from Jasmine Kirkwood was added to by Rachel Houston early in the second half. Dungannon pulled a goal back with 10 minutes to go. With the last hit of the game Dungannon equalised and it went to strokes, which Dungannon won 5-4.
