Garvey girls begin as they mean to go on with a comfy victory at Comber Road

Saturday saw Lisnagarvey Ladies take on Ballymoney in the first league game of the season and they started in thrilling fashion, securing a comfortable 3-0 victory.

Having lost both matches to the County Antrim side last year, the girls knew it would be a tough start to the Premier League campaign.

With the game under way at Comber Road, the home side began strongly and an early goal from Selena Brown at the top of the circle put them ahead early on.

Lisnagarvey maintained a lot of possession during the first half but the Ballymoney side took advantage of some quick breaks, gaining a handful of penalty corners in the first half and forcing some great saves from Garvey goalkeeper Caroline Reid, who wasn’t to be beaten.

A quick hit-out from the Lisnagarvey team saw a great off-load to Rose Montgomery who gained a lot of ground up the right hand side, with the final pass straight onto the stick of forward Sarah Colgan to make it 2-0 to the Comber Road side.

Ballymoney again responded well with some skilful attacking play, gaining more short corners with one skimming just past the post.

With only a few minutes until the final whistle and the three points safe, Lisnagarvey didn’t ease off and won a penalty stroke after some attacking pressure on the Ballymoney defence. Captain Laura Johnston stepped up for the stroke and kept her cool to make the final score 3-0 to the home side.

Whilst the Garvey girls are delighted to put three points on the board, the main focus is getting back into training and focusing on what needs to be done when they face a tough Ards team tomorrow (Saturday).
