Garvey girls lose on flicks

LISNAGARVEY Ladies contested their second final in six days at Belfield in Dublin.

They played holders Greenfields from Limerick in the Irish Hockey Trophy final, having reached the final with a win over Ballymena and then three away trips to Avoca in Dublin, Galway and Limerick.

Both sides started with caution each looking for an early opening. Both teams won early penalty corners although neither goal was tested.

Garvey increased the pace from the start of the second half with fast accurate passing putting Greenfields on the backfoot.

Good work from Laura Johnston, Selena Brown, Jenna Flynn and Sophie McClean continued to cause problems for the defence but Garvey couldn’t get the ball past an in form Greenfields keeper.

Garvey missed a penalty corner in the dying seconds of the match which was followed by five minutes each way of extra time.

Extra time failed to produce the goal that Garvey deserved which left Greenfields the much happier side going into a penalty shoot out.

The first three Garvey strokes were brilliantly saved by the Greenfields keeper and although Caroline Reid saved two for Garvey it was just not Garvey’s day.

Garvey Ladies Firsts will now be concentrating on promotion to the Premier League and the Ulster Senior Cup final.
