Garvey lift Alwood Shield

Lisnagarvey cruised to victory by 29 shots over Portadown in the final of the Alwood Shield at Lurgan on Friday night.

The charity event is sponsored by Alfred Briggs and a cheque for £610 was presented to Menigitis Trust at the reception following the final. The sponsors entertained all those present to a magnificent tea.

The shield is an inter-club charity challenge competition and Lisnagarvey, as winners, received a cheque for £600, with the runners-up taking £400. Garvey led the 15-end game throughout and were never in any trouble when bringing the trophy back to Warren Gardens in the second season since its revival following the loss of the trophy back in 1980.

A four at the second and two threes helped Noel Graham to a 18-9 lead at 11 ends. Portadown came back to 18-12 two ends later but two singles gave Garvey an eight shots win. Though dropping two threes Neil Mulholland came back with three threes and a five to lead 14-7 at the seventh and 17-9 at 11 ends before winning by nine shots.

A four and a three helped Ivan Craig to a 10-3 lead at the fifth and Garvey added three fours to go 24-10 up with an end left at which they dropped a single.

Despite lifting two threes Keith Morrison was 7-9 down at the seventh and 9-14 at 12 ends, but Garvey lifted two doubles and with no score for the last end Garvey lost by a shot.

Garvey finished the season in style in NIBA Division One when they travelled to Dundonald and took all seven points in a 25 shots win.

A five at the eighth for Keith Morrison levelled at 8-8 and a three at 14 ends followed by a six next end gave Garvey a 18-10 lead and they won by seven shots.

A thre and a four helped Neil Mulholland to a 10-9 lead at the eighth but it was 17-18 at 17 ends. A three gave Garvey a 21-19 lead though they dropped a shot at the last end.

Three threes helped Noel Graham to an 11-6 lead at the tenth and 18-7 at 15 ends. Garvey lifted three at 19 ends to lead 19-12 but only won by two shots.

A five and a three helped Ivan Craig to a 14-6 lead at the tenth and he added five and three at 17 and 18 ends to lead 26-11. Garvey won by 15 shots.
