Garvey Seconds keep up pressure at Junior One summit

The local lads now lie third in Junior One, behind both Banbridge Seconds and Annadale Seconds but they have played two matches less and so their drive towards the title is still very much in order.

Garvey started well against their typically strong opponents and opened the scoring minutes into the first half through Matthew Nelson.

After a period of domination, Ryan Donaldson added goal number two to put the visitors in a good position at the half time interval, leading 2-0.

Seconds skipper Philip Stirling urged for more of the same as the second 35 minutes got under way and when he and Matthew Gleave added two more goals, the game seemed to be over.

However, they had not counted on the determination of the home side who suddenly managed to score two quick goals and make the final 10 minutes of the match a frantic affair.

However, with goalkeeper James Milliken in good form, the young Seconds team held on to their 4-2 advantage to grab another three points and keep themselves in the Junior One title race.

It is worth noting that the Garvey Seconds side contained no less than eight players under the age of 19, showing the abundance of talent that exists in the club at the moment.

Among the men of the match were Scott McCabe, making his debut at this level, defender Mark McNellis, improving with every game and the experienced Matthew Gleave, who adds so much to the team with his non-stop attitude.
