This is Johnny’s first season racing and only his second competitive event. This is testament to the hard work he and the rest of the Causeway CC race team put in over the winter months, coached by veteran Robert Downes. The Danny Boy race was run over a challenging 40 mile hilly circuit on the outskirts of Limavady. There was a very strong field contesting this race including many other local club racers looking to gain early season points. In the end Gault attacked on the last lap and was far too strong for the remainder of the field and romped home to his first major victory. Gault was quick to thank his Causeway club members for all of the support they have given to him over the last year since the club formed. Club Chairman, Robert Downes was overcome with emotion at the finish of the race and said that “this win was a win for the entire Causeway CC club”.

Causeway CC is a club that is primarily focused on preparing its members to compete in sportives or challenge cycles and is renowned throughout Ulster for taking complete novice cyclists and providing them the support and training within a friendly environment to achieve their cycling goals, whatever they may be. Several members expressed an interest in racing and Gault was the first of these to land a significant win. Club members are now concentrating on preparing for the inaugural Gran Fondo Causeway charity cycle in July. The club is always keen to welcome new members and anyone interested should come along to Costa Coffee on a Sunday morning a 8:45 or contact the club on [email protected].
