SATURDAY saw a high flying Portadown team come to Gilford in search of three points.

Unluckily for them they met a Gilford team who were up for this match and wanted the three points more.

The first half started of scrappy with both teams finding it hard to get a foot hole into the game early chances were limited to long range shots which hardly troubled either keeper.

The opening goal came well into the first half with a left foot shot from Davie Corbet. The keeper made a good save only then to drop the ball back to the feet of Corbet who slotted the ball home.

Portadown then came at Gilford, trying to get back into the tie. Their chance came when they were awarded a penalty. Gilford’s keeper, Martin Savage, made a great save from the first shot only to then push ball out to an onrushing Portadown player who had an easy shot on goal to made it 1-1 before half time.

Gilford pushed on in the second half, having most of the ball and playing Portadown off the park.

Their hard work paid off with a great piece of play on the right from Mark Feney who rounded two players, only to be chopped down inside the Portadown box, leaving the ref with no option other than giving a penalty.

Mark picked himself up and took the penalty with a great shot, sending the keeper the wrong way, slotting the ball home and Gilford were back in front were the would go onto stay.

Gilford were good for the win and confirmed the three points would be theirs not long after getting their second with a through ball to Davie Corbet, who held of the last defender and placed the ball past the Portadown keeper to get his second of the game and Gilford’s third.

Gilford’s next match is away to Moria Albion on March 27, all support is very welcome.
