Girls go for glory

Lurgan College embark on their cup final mission on Wednesday bidding to clinch a remarkable third Senior Schools’ Cup in four years.Facing them in the showdown at Lisnagarvey will be Rainey Endowed and two players in the Lurgan squad will be creating their own little bit of history by competing in their fourth final. Hannah Grieve and Jill Costley are keen to make it a hat-trick of wins. “It’s brilliant to play in four consecutive finals,” said team captain Hannah. “Not many manage to do it. We are very proud to have done it.

“We have not played Rainey in four years so we don’t know much about them, but we have to concentrate on our own tactics and see how it goes.”

Team mate Jill is also keen to focus on Lurgan rather than their opponents. “It’s about what we can control and how we play. I know what it is like to lose in a final and I don’t want that to happen again.”

Principal of Lurgan College, Mr Trevor Robinson said, “The governors, headmaster, staff and pupils of Lurgan College are proud of our 1st XI girls’ hockey team’s fantastic and unprecedented achievement of reaching the final of the Ulster Schools’ Cup in each of the last four years. These girls have carried on the fine tradition of bringing great honour to their borough, their town, their school, their families and themselves.

“I pay tribute to the girls and their coach, Mrs Julie Hinds, for all the time, effort and commitment they have put into securing this remarkable cup run. All of those hard training sessions in sometimes the most inclement of weather and at the most unsociable of hours will hopefully pay dividends, come the final.

“Retaining the cup would see the girls defend their All-Ireland title in Dublin at the end of the month. We have no doubt our girls’ ability, experience, commitment and motivation will stand them in good stead when they face Rainey Endowed.”
