Ballycastle Golf Club Competition Report

The Glandore Cup was held at Ballycastle Golf Club on Easter Monday and a blustery wind, combined with the course playing to its full length, made scoring difficult but this did not deter seven handicapper Jamie Sutherland from Galgorm Castle who won the competition with a fine nett score of 68.

Second place in the Glandore Cup went to Gerry Norwood with a nett 69, James McNeill was third, also on nett 69, Niall Hill was fourth with a nett 70 and Liam McGonigle took fifth place with a nett 71.

Peter Donnelly won the gross prize with a 78 ahead of Michael Reid from Galgorm Castle on the back nine.

On Saturday 10th April, the club ran a qualifying competition for this year’s Silver Mounted Golf Ball with the top 32 pair’s progressing to the match play stages. This year’s leading qualifiers are Des Nevin and George McVeigh after they returned a magnificent nett 62. Second spot went to Declan McCarry and Shaun McCook with a nett 63 and in third place was the pairing of Steven Devlin and Martin Morgan also on nett 63.

As ever, the match-play draw has produced some intriguing encounters, none more so than the pairing of Seamus Killough and Danny Taggart taking on Michael Page and Brendan Black. Colm Hendrie and Mel Carleton are pitted against Patrick Dallat jnr and John Callan and the defending champions, Billy Rooney and Francis McGinn take on Sean Casey and Eoin McCloskey in their first round match.

The Ballycastle Challenge Cup was played on Sunday 11th April and last year’s Club Champion and Golfer of the Year winner Patrick Dallat jnr. got his season off to the perfect start by winning with a super score of nett 65.

Playing off two, Patrick had fourteen pars and four birdies on his card and this was good enough to give him a one shot victory over Matt Davidson with Joe Donnelly in third place, also with a nett 66. Fourth prize went to Niall Hill with a nett 67 and Rory McCormick took the gross prize for his two under par round of 69.
