Glebe win final home game of the season

GLEBE RANGERS 3 MOYOLA PARK 1

GLEBE Rangers bounced back from their midweek setback at Armagh to register victory against Moyola Park at a stormy Joey Dunlop Centre on Saturday. Glebe opened the scoring in the 15th minute when top scorer Tommy Elder’s free-kick deceived everyone before nestling in the Moyola net.

In extremely trying conditions clear-cut chances were few and far between and it was the visitors’ Steven Kelly who had the next opportunity but his snapshot was too high and failed to trouble Forgrave.

Jackie Morrison ventured forward and sent over a dangerous cross which just failed to find a taker before, in the 43rd minute, hotshot Elder produced a magnificent effort which rebounded off the crossbar with Maguire beaten. Fortunately for the home side Chris Mawhinney, an early replacement for the injured Sheppard, was on hand to steer home and send Glebe boss Peter Cairns in to the half-time interval a happy man.

Conditions continued to deteriorate after the break with both teams continuing to struggle to cope. The first action of any note in the second half came in the 66th minute when Parkhill seized on a mistake in the Moyola defence and raced through before calmly slotting past Maguire.

Moyola responded in positive fashion to this further setback and Forgrave did well to palm over Gallagher’s corner. As the game became stretched Parkhill’s cross found Neil McVicker but the substitute’s diving header went well wide.

Parkhill continued his impressive second half with a fine run, beating two defenders before appearing to be impeded inside the box. However ref Davy Walker waved away any appeals for a penalty.

Moyola pulled one back in the 81st minute when Steven Kenning nodded past Forgrave but it was to prove to be only a consolation. In the final action of the game Maguire was again called into action to palm away a fine long-range effort from Elder as the Glebe sent the fans home happy in their final home game of the season.
