Glenravel PS pupils qualify for Ulster cross-country finals

IN their first year of entry to the Flahavan’s Primary School Cross Country League, organised by Northern Ireland Athletics, Glenravel Primary School finish top school overall in the Causeway Area.

The league consisted of 3 rounds, the first held in Ballymoney last October, round 2 took place at University of Ulster Coleraine in December and the third round last Wednesday at Roe Valley Leisure Centre, Limavady.

The introduction of Cross Country running into the school has unearthed a natural talent for running among the boys and girls with some outstanding performances.

The boys’ team and girls’ team each finished 2nd overall with steady performances from the whole team, most of them improving in each round as they learned from experience. This combined finish from the girls and boys teams gave the top overall school prize to Glenravel Primary School.

Some fine individual performances took place. Eoin Hynds finished a superb 2nd place in all 3 rounds and gained a fine collection of medals for his efforts.

Sean McCusker was the other medal winner for the boys’ team finishing 3rd place in the final round. Sean showed steady improvement moving from 5th in round one to 4th in round two and into the medals in round 3, Sean is in P6 and will have another chance to compete next year.

Top performance was that of Rachel Brown who finished 1st in all three rounds and was awarded the Springwell Cup for the best overall girl. Rachel won all three rounds with a display of fine running as she flowed effortlessly round the course to win by a large margin on each occasion.

The final takes place on Wednesday 22nd February at Mallusk playing fields in Belfast.

The primary school races will be the first on the bill at the Ulster Cross Country Championships and the Glenravel girls and boys may have some real contenders among them for the title.
