Goals galore for sides

IT seems as if it rained all the month of October and North West clubs decided it was appropriate that it rained goals in the Cup competitions at the weekend too.

There were four games with ten goals scored in them, the first were Caw, as they hammered Douglas Bridge 7-2 in the City Cup. A young Second Division side Douglas Bridge were always up against it playing a team at the top of First Division. Kyle Armstrong and Jeffrey Lynch scored twice while Sean and Connor Kelpie got one a piece, Gary Harris and an own goal completed the Caw scorers. Mark McIlhatton and James Duffy netted for The Bridge.

Premier Division side Dungiven Reserves drew 3-3 against First Division side Claudy United at full time, but Dungiven romped it in extra time scoring a further four to win 7-3. Kevin Johnston got a hat-trick for Dungiven and Robert Watt a hat-trick for Claudy. Further Dungiven goals from Emmett Duffy, Connor O’Kane and two from Ferghal McGuigan saw Dungiven through.

Eglinton progressed comfortably into the next round of the City Cup as well winning 7-1 at home to Draperstown Reserves. Barry Murray grabbed a hatrick and strike partner Johnny Hume got two. Veteran Shaun Whorskey and young Damien Barr were also on the score sheet. Adrian McGuigan netted Draperstown’s consolation.

First Division side Burnfoot won 3-1 away to unbeaten Irish Street. Scott McNoughter and Ross Elder again on target for Burnfoot and Jason Scott with a good goal sent Burnfoot into the hat for the next round. Paddy McColgan scored for the home side.

In the all Second Division tie Glendermott caused a surprise with a 2-1 win over derby rivals Churchill Noel Hawthorne scored for Churchill but Jordan Abbott and free scoring Glen Crawford put Glendermott through.

In the all Premier Division clash Burndennett and Newbuildings Reserves needed extra time with the home edging the result 5-4 in the end to progress.

The league’s bottom placed club Artigarvan came up against Premier Division opposition in Drummond and gave a good account of themselves but went down 4-0. Drummond’s Player Manager, Chris Moore netting twice. Sean Boyd and Paul Love with the others. Tullyally and Donemana was another game where ten goals where scored with Tullyally scoring seven of them. Andy Cooke must have thought he was in a dream as he netted five goals and Richard Kayne got the other two.

Greysteel v BBOB was called off very late Sion Swifts v Lincoln Courts and Maghera v Claudy Rovers also fell foul of the weather with unplayable pitches.

In the Supplementary Cup, Dungiven Thirds and BBOB Reserves also needed extra-time after a 4-4 final score. Dungiven went on to win 6-4 in extra time to reach the semi-final. Greysteel Reserves and Lincoln Reserves was also postponed.

There were two important League games played, in the First Division Ardmore entertained undefeated Ballykelly and they ensured that the title is going to be very tight this season, as they won 4-0 with Paul Simon Tracey getting a brace and Peter McLaughlin and Gerard McDaid also hitting the net for Ardmore.

In the Second Division another unbeaten side Roe Rovers Reserves lost that mantle as they went down 2-1 in a local derby to Limavady Rugby Club Reserves. Rugby Club led in the fifth minute thanks to Ferghal Hartin. Niall Deehan scored a cracking equaliser in the top corner but the energetic Gary McCormack scored the winner.
