Golden boy McManus storms to double win at Mary Peters Track

Two of East Coast Athletic Club ‘s track stars took part in the Northern Ireland Masters Athletics Association Track & Field Championships on Saturday (June 20).

Running in the 400m and 800m, club coach Mark McManus showed his worth when he was awarded not one, but two gold medals for his category.

McManus ran 53.9 seconds in the 400m, which was a season’s best. Against stiff competition, he impressed again in the 800m, taking third place overall and first in his category with a time of 2:08.95.

Allyson O’Toole came home with two bronze medals in both of her events, the 400m and 800m. In the 400m, Allyson ran a new personal best of 1:05.84. She also ran her best ever time in the 800m event, with a time of 2:31.01.

In the early hours of Saturday morning, club chairman, and international athlete, Justin Maxwell took on one of the UK’s toughest long-distance events - the 95-mile West Highland Way Ultra.

Maxwell proved he is one of the country’s top endurance athletes when he moved his way through the field to finish in fourth, in a time of 17:58:31.

If this wasn’t impressive enough, Maxwell’s 95th mile was completed in a time of 5:38.

At the Lisburn half-marathon in midweek, Matthew Hewitt took ninth in 1:18:18. It’s all the more remarkable given that this was only his second-ever attempt at the distance. Tracey Parke finished in 2:00:15.

In the Lisburn 10k, Chris Davis ran 40:40 (81st), Karl Joyce 52:44 (657th) and Glenda Stewart 54:49 (209th lady).

Kelly and Charlie Patterson finished well up the field in the 3k Fun Run.

Corey Urwin and Danny Hylands took on the ‘Wasdale X’ - the world’s hardest Full Iron Man Triathlon on Sunday. Results unavailable at time of print.
