Golden Gaynor

CITY of Derry’s leading freestyle swimmer Ian Gaynor produced two superb swims at the Ulster Championships Qualifying held at Lisburn Leisureplex last weekend. This puts him in contention for the Ulster titles next month in Bangor.

Ian claimed the gold medal in both the Open 50 metres Free and the Open 100. His finishing times were 23.78 seconds and 52.58 seconds respectively, he also took bronze in the 200.

In the Boys’ 15 year old age group Gavin Loughrey totally dominated the Freestyle events taking gold in the 100, 200 and 400. Darryl McGlinchey took silver in the same 400 event and bronze in the 200 Breast. Gavin also took silver on the 200 Individual Medeley (I.M).

In the same Group Cormac Gillen took gold in the 100 Fly and silver in the 200 Back.

Jordan Brady James swimming in the 13-year-old age group took silver in the 400 Free and bronze in the 200 Breast. In the 17-year-old age group Connell O’Brien netted bronze in the 200 I.M and 400 Free.

The 12-year-old City Girls swimming in their first major event were very prominent in their age group. Leah Casey produced two great swims to capture gold in the 100 and 200 Free. Mary Doherty finished with Gold in the 200 I.M. Mary also took silver in the 200 Breast and Bronze in the 100 Free. Maria Cooley showed lots of potential with silver in the 100, 200 and 400 Free and bronze in the 100 Back.

Ann McLaughlin placed second in the fourteen year old Girls 200 Breast with Ciara Baker and Lara McIver taking silver and bronze respectively in the same event in the 15-year-old age group. Also in the 15 category Claire Bradley also took silver in the 200 I.M and Bronze in the 400 Free. Pearse Bradley finished in silver in the 200 Breast and bronze in the 400 Free in the Boys.
