GOLF: Clive takes McMullan Shield at Rathmore

FINISHING your round with a score of 45 points over 18 holes would probably have most golfers writing their victory speech and rehearsing it several times.

However, at Rathmore Butch Fleming (28) had his victory snatched away when he heard that Clive Shorter (13) had a back 9 of one under gross to pip Butch on countback.

Local sources say that Butch's unfamiliarity with the later holes cost him. In third spot was musician Trevor Keys (20) with 40 including two twos.

Fourth and fifth places were taken, on countback again, by Richard Millar (16) and Jon Neely (14) Frankie McDonald had a creditable gross 70 off a handicap of six.

The Russell Turkington Memorial Cup is set for April 24.
