GOLF: Local man engraves G-Mac's name on US Open trophy

LOCAL engraver Norman Ogilby has just completed a very special job.

For Norman, who has his own trophy selling business on the outskirts of Coleraine, was entrusted to mark Graeme McDowell's 'major' winning exploits to the annals of history.

The proprietor on N&N Trophies told Times Sport he was nervous when Graeme's father, Kenny first approached him about engraving his Graeme's name onto the famous old trophy.

But Norman says he is glad to have left his mark on the trophy.

"When Kenny first asked me I wasn't keen," said Norman.

"I was thinking too much about the history of the trophy.

"When you look at the list of past winners it's a who's who of top class golfers.

"I was a bit nervous in case anything went wrong and something would happen to this world famous trophy.

"But Kenny approached me again and said Graeme really wanted me to do it so I couldn't refuse him.

"When I reflect on it, it really is a massive honour to work on a trophy like that.

"It is a beautiful cup in its own right.

"But when you think of what it stands for and who has won it over the years its stature grows even more.

"I was delighted when Graeme won it and its link with this area will be there forever.

"And that's added to with a local company doing the engraving. So no matter where the trophy goes in the future its link with the North Coast will go with it.

"One of the biggest thrills about doing the job was getting my picture taken with the cup.

"I mentioned this to Kenny and he got Graeme to autograph the picture for me so I have a lasting memory of a very special job.

"Hopefully it won't be the last though.

"I'd love for Graeme to win a few more majors and who knows maybe I'll get the chance to work on them too," added Norman.
