GOLF: Marvellous McKenna wins 2016 Scratch Cup at Roe Park

Roe Park Lady Captain Karen Brown has her special day as she welcomes members and guests to play for some amazing prizes in her very own Lady Captain's Day.

The men will have their usual club stablefords’ on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday with Cuts Hair Salon sponsoring Saturday’s competition.

Roe Park Captain Seamus McConalogue welcomed golfers from all over the north coast last week to participate in the annual Scratch Cup held at the resort.

Seamus himself provided the fantastic prizes on offer whilst finding time to play in the Intermediate Scratch Cup which was held for mid handicap players and sponsored by 2015 Captain Frank Boyd and wife Jacinta.

The course was in magnificent condition thanks to the sterling efforts of Ornie McIlroy and his fantastic green keeping staff at the resort. Played over two rounds Mother Nature also lent a helping hand by providing a break in the recent wet weather at just the right time.

Damien McKenna from Foyle GC was crowned champion after a two over par first round of 72 and a brilliant two under par second round of 68 gave him a winning total of level par 140.

The runner-up spot went to James Lindsay from North West and third place went to Adam Brown from Portstewart. Sean Hasson from Roe Park played some of his best ever golf to win the best overall nett prize after shooting a nett total of 136.

Kieran Berryman also of Roe Park won the best gross first round prize with 71 and Roo McCrudden from Portrush won the best nett first round prize with a 67.

Best gross prize for the second round went to Cormac McGeady from Foyle with a 69 and the best nett went to Roe Parks’ Captains’ Day champion Ricky Cochrane with a nett score of 66.

The Intermediate Scratch Cup gave the mid handicappers a chance to test their golfing skills on the same setup albeit over just the one round. Noel McClarey who emerged the victor after scoring a superb gross 82. He just pipped John McKay, in second place with the same score, on count back.

Derek Nicholl took third place with a gross score of 86 and Mervyn Brown took the best nett prize thanks to his 71.

Captain Seamus McConalogue brought an older set of clubs out of retirement and they worked a treat as he won the second best nett with 73.

The Lady Captains Prize for Men Club Stableford was played on Thursday with Johnathan Forsythe taking the victory thanks to a superb round of 43 points.

Michael Mullan continued his excellent form with a score of 41 points to give him the runner-up spot and Malcolm Stuart claimed third place.
