Golf: McConaghy wins Monthly Medal

Ballycastle Golf Club Competition Report

The Monthly Medal was badly affected by the miserable weather at Ballycastle on Saturday but Andrew McConaghy battled through the wet and windy conditions superbly to win with a nett 69.

It’s been an excellent couple of weeks for this year’s Glentaisie Trophy champions with Stephen Devlin winning the Marine Hotel Cup last weekend and now Andrew adding the June Medal to his collection.

Second place in Saturday’s competition went to Colin Smyth with Mel Carleton finishing in third after both golfers recorded nett 71’s.

Mel’s good score was rewarded with eighteen points in the Golfer of the Year competition and this has catapulted him into the lead on sixty-nine points, four ahead of John Callan in second place.

Michael Dallat jnr has now taken a firm grip on this season’s Winchester Challenge Bowl after he extended his lead to twenty-one points with just four events remaining.

Sunday’s fourball betterball competition was won by Aaron McAuley and Conleth McCaughan with an excellent total of 45 points.

The pairing of David Getty and Brendan Black finished in second place ahead of Patrick Coyles and Gerard Waide after they each carded 44 points.

Harry Sheehan finished with an impressive nine straight pars to win the midweek open stableford competition with a total of 43 points. Eddie McMullan picked up the second place prize with Steven Devlin third and Rory Gallagher fourth after all three members returned 40 points on Wednesday.

There was disappointment for the club’s Junior Cup and Barton Shield teams at the weekend as they both slipped out of their respective competitions.

The Junior Cup team had an epic tussle with local rivals Gracehill at Fortwilliam on Saturday evening but finished up on the wrong end of a 3-2 score-line. The Barton Shield team faced a very strong Dunmurry side at Hilton Templepatrick on Sunday morning and despite battling hard couldn’t quite get the better of their opponents.
