GOLF: Open week continues at Foyle Golf Club

Thursday sees the Ladies Club (including mens 18 hole) competition takes centre stage, while on Friday the First Trust Bank stableford competition is down for decision.

The Adairs Gas and Appliances stableford will be played for on Saturday and the confined Over 50’s competition takes place on Sunday.

While last Sunday’s Stableford was again well supported as inform Stephen Moran took top honours with a good score of 39 points with single handicappers Martin Kivelehan (4) 38 points and Damien Martin (6) 37 points after a break of tie finishing second and third respectively.

The club sweep went to 21 handicapper Stephen Moran after scoring 43 points and the Raymond Tracey (14) with 40 points was second. The CSS was 37 points.

The Crumley Construction Monthly Medal saw the category 0-10 go to Paul McGuigan (1) after scoring nett 67.

Cathal O’Donnell (12) with nett 68 claimed the category 11-16 and Robert Ewing (17) with nett 76 won the category 17+. The CSS was 70 points.

While the Thursday Open Series continued at City of Derry this week and in tough conditions Colin Jeffery (7) built an unassailable score of 38 points to take first place.

On his outward journey Jeffery recorded a useful 18 points despite a somewhat shaky start when he blanked the relatively easy Par 5 3rd, ‘Longfellow’.

However, a birdies at the difficult playing 9th, ‘Daly’s’ gave him time to mount a challenge over the closing holes and he duly added 20 points to his account ensuring victory by a margin of two from his nearest challenger.

Second prize went to low handicapper Ian Anthony (6) who’s battling score of 36 points was a mark of just how difficult the course was playing.

John Chambers (9) found that his 35 points, compiled late in the day, was enough to secure third spot but he will be rueing his failure to conquer the relatively easy Par 4 5th, ‘The Gap’ which certainly cost him victory. The best of the visitors was Jim McLaughlin (16) on 32 points. The Thursday Open Series continues through until the Autumn.
