GOLF: Ricky Cochrane shines to win Captain's Day at Roe Park

The rain stayed away thankfully and with Captain Seamus selecting some exciting but tough pin positions coupled with fast greens it was going to be a test of all a golfers’ skillset to win the day.

Ricky Cochrane (2) and son Jamie went out early and played out of their skins to produce a fantastic score of 39 points.

They matched each other almost shot for shot but it was Ricky who prevailed eventually running out the winner thanks to a superb level par round 70.

Jamie, playing off 9, can be proud of his six over round 76 as he ultimately had to settle for third place. Norman Martin went out last and scored another fantastic 39 points to pip Jamie and claim second place thanks to a better back nine score. Fourth place went to Liam Berryman who scored 38 points whilst Andy Young won the best gross prize thanks to his three over round 73 and 37 points. Kieran Doherty won the best front nine with Martin Deehan winning the second best front nine. Best back nine went to Gary Moore with second best back nine going to Johnathan Forsythe.

The Senior’s prize was won by Willie Scott and John McKay won the Past Captain’s prize. Committee prize was won by Vice-Captain Arnie Simpson whilst the Longest Drives were won by big hitters Sean Hasson and Ryan Magee.

The Nearest the Pin prizes went to Kieran Doherty, Norman McMichael, Derek Nicholl and Kieran Berryman winning two of them.

Northwest Inter Club League Club Captain Jamie Vinnicombe inspired his team to a fantastic win against Ballyliffin in the return leg of their first round match held at Roe Park.

Trailing by four points from the first leg they won all seven matches and take a huge step towards qualifying for the final in September.

Spirits will certainly be high heading into their second round match against Foyle in a few weeks’ time.

This week sees the busy season continue at Roe Park with another big tournament on Sunday in the shape of The Depot Bar Scratch Cup which is always a huge event for the lower handicap golfers.

There will also be an Intermediate Scratch Cup for the higher handicap golfers on the same day.

With amazing prizes provided by sponsors Frank and Jacinta Boyd as well as The Depot Bar it looks like being a fantastic day for all.

The annual Generation Shield sponsored by Frank McGuigan will also be taking place on Friday as young and old come together to compete for some great prizes.
