GOLF: Roe Park's Ulster Cup squad progress well

It was all systems go at Roe Park last week as golfers got back to playing regularly again after a dismal fortnight of cold, wet weather finally came to an end.

Members especially could finally look forward to a chance at winning some top prizes with the many competitions being held.

Of those was the first in a series of Monthly Medals as sponsors SJ Mitchell & Co again provided a variety of amazing prizes.

Michael Mullin played out of his skin to come away with the victory scoring a nett 62.

There was a host of players on nett 65 with Shea Hogg recording the best one to claim the runner up spot. Club President James McGuinness took third and Kieran Berryman had the lowest gross score shooting a superb round of one over par 71.

Thursday’s Club Stableford saw the in-form Willie Scott score 2 birdies and seven pars on his way to a fantastic total of 42 points to take the victory.

David Craig finished second with 39 points beating Bryan Donaghy in third on count back with the same score.

Saturday saw a Club Stableford sponsored by McIvor Cars won by Kieran Doherty who scored an impressive 41 points in tough conditions.

Indeed Charlie Mearns was the clubhouse leader with 38 points for a good while but ultimately had to settle for the runner-up spot.

Mervyn Dolan played well for third place with 37 points and Andy Young claimed the best gross prize with a four over par round 74.

Roe Park’s Ulster Cup squad headed to Balmoral GC for the second leg of their first round tie.

Defending a 5&2 lead from the first leg they lost 4&3 to progress to the second round, winning 8&6 overall.

The second week of the Spring League sees Alex Steele, John McKay, Mervyn Brown and Stephen Rainey leading with 158 points.

This week sees the Spring League continue with club competitions on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday with Saturday’s being sponsored by Limavady & Bells Taxis.

Meanwhile at City of Derry’s Sunday Society Captain’s Day went to Ian Jarvis (19) after he scored 39 points.

Second was Graham Hepburn (4) after he scored 37 and Stephen Doherty (12) also with 37 points claimed third spot.

The Golfer of the Yeear prize sees Paul Glackin (17) after scoring 169 points.

Second is Tony McCann (14) who is on 164 points and Paul Concannon (17) with 152 points is third.

While the defibrillator training course will take place this Friday in the clubhouse at 1.30pm. The session will last 30 to 45 minutes and the course will be facilitated by club member Neil Duncan.
