GOLF: Team Six hold one point advantage at Foyle

With the sixth and final full counting cards returned in the Paul Butchers Spring League Qualifying at Foyle Team six John Logue, Cormac Cassidy, Albert Gurney and Kieran Duffy having accumulated 556 points from their six cards, maintain a slender lead.

Team Seven of Robert Ewing, David Wilson, Declan Ryan and Brendan Gallagher are just a point behind, while Team Four of Ciaran McGuinness, Cyril Ming, Damien Ming and Dermott Harkin with 547 points currently in third spot.

Foyle Sunday members enjoyed a fine day for golf at the weekend and again the competition turned out to be very competitive.

There was a three way 42 points break of tie deciding the podium positions.

Long hitting Peter Roddy (13) took pole position with James Meehan (26) returning to form finishing second with third place going to Brendan Grimes (12).

The Easter Egg competition winners were Ciaran O’Doherty, Albert Gurney, Brendan Gallagher and Mark Doherty.

Pauls Butchers Spring League and Easter Egg competitions continue daily, while another big crowd is expected for the Sunday Society competition this weekend.

Meanwhile a three way break of tie was needed to separate the winners in Saturday’s confined Stableford competition at City of Derry, as the standard continues to be high.

Richard Burton (13) with 37 points came out tops after he played some super golf, with Ricky Porter (17) and Shane Kelly (13) second and third respectively.

Once again, rolling back the years, the ever popular Bert Whoriskey emerged the winner of last week’s Thursday Society at Prehen.

Full results were - Thursday Society - 1, B. Whoriskey, 37 points; 2, break of tie, A. Duncan, 36; 3, K. Barrett, 36.

Dates for the diary at Prehen next month are as follows: March 10th, Joe Ramsey Trophy; March 24th, Ted Pope Trophy; March 31st, Mr. Robin McClay’s Skipper’s Day with presentation and meal.

Meanwhile Harry Coyle certainly commanded the attention of North-West Golf Club’s handicap convenor when he spreadeagled the field in last week’s Thursday Society.

Harry returned a superb score of 39 points (over 16 holes) to win by three.

Full results were - singles stableford - 1, Harry Coyle, 39 points; 2, Brian McCarroll, 36; 3, break of tie, Michael McLaughlin 36 (-1) 35.

The “2’s” were carded by - J. McGinley and D. McAteer (8th); T. Meehan and M. McLaughlin (13th); T. Kelly, T. Meehan, B. McCarroll, S. Stewart, M. Fitzpatrick, K. Quigg, M. McLaughlin and H. Doran (16th).

This Thursday’s competition is another singles stableford event and a big field is expected to take part.
