A birdie blitz from Shane as he produces best round of the year

The conditions were still dictating that the lift clean and place rule on closely mown areas be in play for yet another week.

Just over a 120 entrants were in action in this stroke competition. It was Shane Moore (4) who shot the best round of the day and probably the best round at the course so far this year. It was a scintillating exhibition of golf by the four handicapper as he went on to romp home in 68 strokes to return a nett 64 and win his first medal.

Starting with a birdie at the first hole he became somewhat unstuck at the second short par three hole where the only blemish on his card was to be recorded, a double bogey five. Play over the next sixteen holes however could only be described as something special. Birdies at the fourth and seventh with pars at all the rest through the front nine helped him reach the turn in 34 shots.

Shane was now well in control of his game and fired six pars in a row from the tenth to the fifteenth. With victory very much in his grasp he managed to step up another gear and finish in spectacular style with a birdie blitz over the last three closing holes to come home in another 34 strokes. His nett 64 would not be beaten, securing him of a very memorable victory.

Paul Breen (18) was awarded second place when he returned a nett 65. Playing very consistent golf he managed to cover the font nine in 38 blows by shooting seven pars and only dropping shots at the fifth and sixth holes. The back nine scoring wasn’t just as productive and resulted in 45 strokes being taken after only two pars were recorded at holes eleven and twelve. Nevertheless his gross 83 score on the day was good enough to get him into the winners enclosure once again.

Kevin Carson (18) took third spot with a nett 67. Four pars over the front nine helped him to finish this leg in 41 strokes. It was a similar performance on the back nine where another four pars helped him come home in 44 strokes for a gross 85.

The gross prize again went to Kevin Munster (2) after he covered the course in 73 strokes. Three shots dropped in the first two holes wasn’t the start he expected but he still went on to finish the front nine in two over par 37.

Three birdies and four pars during play on the back nine made a big contribution to his score of 36 strokes.

Seamus Patton (12) got fourth prize when he returned a nett 68. Seamus had one birdie and eight pars during the course of his round. He went out in 40 and came home in 40 for a gross 80.

Fifth place went to Paul Lavery (7) after his nett 68 return. Paul completed the front nine in level par 35 with the help of seven pars and a birdie. Another five pars and a birdie on the back nine helped to come home in 40 strokes.

The seniors’ prize this week went to Joe McAvoy after he returned a nett 71.

There were just three twos recorded in this competition.

Section winners: 0-12, Conall Kerr, net 69; 13-18, Bernard McKeever, net 69; 19-28, Kieran Devlin, net 71.

The winner of the junior competition on Saturday was Nathan Agg with a score of 40pts.

Captain’s Day is this Saturday and the prize giving dinner will be in the Ashburn Hotel starting at 7.30pm. All prize-winners will be expected to attend.
