Alan comes to the fore with a level par score

Alan McVey, whose handicap was seven, had a dream round of golf, won the competition and is now down to six.

He shot the best gross score of the day, a level par 69.

He had the best nett score as well, a nett 62 or 43 stableford points. He had no less than five birdies in his round, more than anyone else.

And, after all that, Alan only won by one point.

Kenny Arlow (14) was runner-up with 42 points. Kenny has been in great form all this season so far and he showed great resilience in this round as he had only three points after three holes. To finish with 42 after that start was really brilliant.

Tom Mulholland (8), who is enjoying a little purple patch at the moment, won the low section with 40 points.

Dean Nicoletti (6), another naturally gifted player, was runner-up in the low section with 39 points.

Richard Coburn ‘s handicap continues to drop. He is now down to 14 after winning the middle section with 41 points. Michael Robinson (15) was runner-up in this section, also with 41 points.

The great Merton McDowell (20) won the high section with 39 points, pushing Pat McGarry (26) into second spot on countback.

Kieran Magennis won the best gross prize with a two over par 71. He beat Rory Madeley on countback. Kieran would have won it much easier if he had avoided an ugly seven at the 14th hole. Kieran had two 2’s (12th and 15th), which is always nice.

Finally, the prize for the best senior player went to Philip McCourt (13) with 39 points.

It was a brilliant competition and there was an equally brilliant winner in Alan McVey.
