Alan’s flying start at Lisburn GC

Playing the second nine holes, he started with two pars at two of the most difficult holes on the course.

He finished on a high note with two more pars to win by one point from David Wightman (24). David had every chance of winning but failed to score at the final hole. Eight players finished on 20 points with Stephen Stewart (9) getting the verdict for third place.

The match play leagues were completed for the play-offs. The big surprise was the first defeat of Jim Bell and Brian Patterson by David Gardiner and John Boyd. Jim and Brian progress to play Colin Todd and John McMillan.

Stephen Shaw had to compete without his playing partner Gavin Hawkins but the pair qualified to meet John and Nigel Price.

The two other quarter finals are Rodney Osborne & Martin Lilley against Coiln Reid & Connor Watson and Peter Cairns & David Megrath against Richard McDowell & Philip Sanaghan.

Wednesday Competition

John Dale won the Wednesday Sweep with 25 points, one more than Billy Gregge with Billy Hawthorne third on 23.

Sunday Winter league: 1st Tom McMillan 24 pts. Dessie Kerr, Glen McCambley, Brian Rainey and Billy Gregge finished on 23 with Des being awarded second place followed by Glen. Closest to flag at 4th Peter Reid. Closest to flag at 6th Alan Gilmore.

It was great to see Andy Gibb back playing golf after his recent illness.

David Bolas did not win the Sunday Sweep but he was the top ‘money winner’ as he was the only competitor to register a two. Billy Gregge won on count back from Ken Haslem with Brian Houston third.

• The ladies table tennis competition was completed on Thursday night. Valerie Rooney defeated Julie Robinson in a closely contested final.

Johnny Cash Show

The Golf Club was full to capacity for the eagerly awaited award winning Johnny Cash Tribute Show. An excellent meal was served in the restaurant which was appropriately decorated with silver and black balloons. Members wearing black shirts and ties added to the atmosphere.

When J.P. Mack entered the stage his voice bore an uncanny resemblance to ‘The Man in Black’. He rendered some of Cash’s classics: Ring of Fire, I Walk the Line, A Boy named Sue and Hurt.

After the interval there was an opportunity for some audience participation followed by J.P.’s sister Caroline Parker who sang some of Joanne Carter Cash’s hits. These included Juke Box Blues and Times a Wasting. The couple also sang ‘Jackson’ the country hit by Johnny Cash and Joanne Carter which was recorded in 1967. A most enjoyable evening ended with a selection of the all-time favourites.
