Allen sisters triumph

ZOE and Katie Allen, members of Lurgan Golf Club, played in the Munster Junior Championships at Muskerry, Co Cork last week and took home all three junior trophies.

It’s the second provincial title Zoe has won having taken the Connacht Junior title last June in Ballinrobe.

The tournament format was one round of strokeplay with the top 32 players proceeding to the knockout matchplay stages.

Zoe finished as top qualifier and her sister Katie took the prize for the lowest under 18 player to qualify.

Zoe won the Munster Junior Championship and the Margaret O’Sullivan Cup for the lowest qualifier with an eight over par 83.

The last one to win top qualifier and then go on to win the championship in the one year was Lisa Maguire.

Katie won the Alice Coman trophy for the lowest girl qualifier ie U18 with an 11 over par 86.

Zoe and Katie had the largest winning margin in round one, Zoe won six and four and Katie seven and six. Katie was knocked out in round two by last year’s winner Nora Connolly (Mallow).

Zoe was drawn against Nora in Friday morning’s semi final.

In an up and down match, where only one hole was halved, it was all square after 15 holes but a par, birdie finish was enough for Zoe to proceed to the final.

Zoe closed out the final three and one with birdies on the sixteenth and the seventeenth to add the Munster Junior Championship to the Connacht Junior title which she won last June.
