Amazing prizes on offer at City of Derry this weekend

Alfie Kane (9) returned to winning ways at Prehen in the Club Stroke competition on Sunday recording a creditable 68 nett that was also the best gross of the day.

He was followed home by Eddie Mitchell (16) who lost out on first place on a tie break but when you have three double bogies and a quadruple bogey on your card you have to be considered fortunate to be in the prizes at all.

Ciaran Grant (25) was third on 69 nett in a round that included three triple bogies and a quadruple bogey.

Aaron King (7) scored 40 points to head the field in Monday night’s qualifier, a shotgun start with 47 contenders for the top sixteen spots. 33 points (break of tie) was the cut off mark and full details of the draw are available in the locker room notice board.

Local school teacher Dermot Hegarty (20) was top of the class at City of Derry on Saturday taking first place in the open stableford with a fantastic 43 points.

As well as securing first place he had the added reward of losing three shots off his handicap. Simon Swaby (11) finished in second place with an excellent 42 points, with 23 of them coming on the back nine.

Kevin Green (16) was best of a trio on 39 points thanks to a favourable tie break going his way.

Aaron Taylor (1) was three under par on the front nine, didn’t do as well on the back nine but still ended up with the best gross on 35 points.

Meanwhile George Jackson, the Pierce Purcell team captain has picked his team to represent the club in their match against Kilrea at Castlerock this Sunday.

The pairings are Paul Glackin and Maurice Quigg; John Hancock and Dan McAnulla; Michael McCullough and James Desmond; David Smyth and Eric Watson and John O’Doherty and Damian King.

Club colours should be worn and supporters are most welcome. The match tees of at 4pm.

While last Thursday’s competition at City of Derry was secured by Ian Orr (18) as he recorded his first ever golfing victory in superb style at Prehen in the weekly Thursday Open.

A well compiled 45 points left him five points clear of the chasing pack. Ian (father of Prehen’s Fred Daly team stalwart Matthew) was steadiness personified with halves of 23 and 22 points.

James Lindsay, who plays off a scratch handicap had a level par gross round for 40 points and second place nett and indeed the best gross and Christopher Love (17) finished in third place with his 39 points.

Paul Monaghan (19) was fourth nett with 38 points and Scott Somers (13) from Faughan Valley was the best visitor with his 36 points.
