Andrew wins the Coburn Cup as over 170 golfers compete for famous trophy

One of the oldest cups played for at Banbridge Golf Club is the Coburn Cup and on Saturday 11 July over 170 competitors played to have their names inscribed on the famous cup.

The CSS was 68 and 21 players had their handicaps reduced on the day.

The best senior prize was won by a man spotted on the practice ground lately, Tony Ewbanks (14) with a score of 39 pts.

Good to see a dedicated golfer getting his just rewards.

Aiden Doran (18) won the high section with 41 pts.

Joe McGivern (13) won the middle section.

The low section was won by the ever popular Martin McAleenan (10) with 40 pts.

Well done to all three of these up and coming players.

Second place was secured by Christopher Lennon (20) with a total of 42 pts.

A snowman on the 17th hole cost him victory, but it will only be a matter of time before he is in the winners enclosure.

The best gross score on the day was a 67 by who else only Jim Carvill.

Jim played effortless golf, makes the game look easy and it is no wonder he has a “smash factor” of 1.5 down from a driver to a 4-iron!

The winner of the Coburn Cup 2015 was Andrew Hanlon (22) with a total of 43 pts, one clear of the field.

Andrew birdied the 1st and never looked back.

A steady finish of 4 bogeys in the new land and Andrew was over the line.

Hopefully, this is the first of many.

A smaller field than normal played in the Bank Holiday Stroke on Monday July 13.

It was a beautiful day for golf and for a change there was very little wind.

John McDowell (13) played the best golf of his season so far for a great score of nett 62.

A highlight was a fantastic shot into the 10th and a 8ft putt converted for a 2.

John was looking good for victory.

One young man hadn’t read the script and Jamie Thompson (8) played the best golf of his life.

A fantastic controlled game of golf yielded one birdie and one bogey with 16 pars, gross 69, nett 61 and a famous victory.

No-one else came close!
