Autumn pairsat Roe Park GC

ENTRIES for the Autumn Pairs competition at Roe Park Golf Club is now open, the competition will start this Thursday and continue for six weeks.

While the major finals of Roe Park took place last weekend.

On Saturday, the George Walker Monthly Medal Final, this was contested by all those who finished in the top 3 and best gross in the monthly medals.

With the course set up from the white tees 19 players tried to claim the main prize. After 9 holes it looked to be a tight competition, Andrew Young had a net 34, which tied with Noel McClarey. Ricky Cochrane had a net 36 and Mark McCormick a 37. Which meant all was still to play for.

A closing net 33 by Mark McCormick giving him a total of 70 and meant he beat Andy Young into second place on countback over the back nine.

The final of the Nelson McGonagle was also contested on the Saturday between Ross McMullan and Charlie Mearns. After a very tight match Ross was 1 up playing the 18th hole, and after 4 shots each and with Charlie gimme distance away, Ross holed his putt from 30 feet to half the hole and win the match.

The remainder of the finals took place on the Sunday. First up were Eamon Berryman and Ricky Cochrane competing of the Ross McMullan Scratch Matchplay. This promised to be a very tight match between the top 2 seeds. And with 7 of the first 9 holes being halved and with Cochrane winning the 4th and Kieran the 5th both with birdies the match was all square at the half way stage. Kieran then won the 10th with par and 11th with birdie to go 2 up, a lead he held for the remainder of the match and a par at the 17th was enough for Kieran to win the match 2 and 1. This was Kieran’s third major victory during the last month and has capped an excellent golfing year for him.

The Roe Park Cup final was also a closely fought final between Marty McVeigh and Ross McMullan with the match all square after 11 holes it looked likely that this could go to extra holes. But a net par at the 13th and a par at 16 put Ross 2 up with 2 to play. Could he hold his nerve to win his second title in two days? With both players taking 4 at the 17th Ross won the match 2 and 1.

The remaining singles final was next. Eamon Brown got off to a good start against Kevin Boyd in the George McKeever Singles Final winning the second hole to go 1 up. Unfortunately that spurred on Kevin who won the next 6 holes to be 5up at the turn. Kevin was in excellent form and won the next three holes to win 8-6.

The Malcolm Stuart Mixed Foursomes Final was next on the course, a level match for Martin Rafferty and Mary McCloskey against Phillip & Rosemary McKeever. With Phillip and Rosemary gaining an early advantage only for Martin and Mary to win the second hole, and after 9 holes the match was all square. With the next six holes being shared by both sides, 3 holes each, it was still all square after 15 holes. But with Martin and Mary winning both the 16th and 17th holes they won the match 2 and 1.

The Geoffrey Conn Doubles final was the last event of the day. Charlie Mearns, in his second final of the weekend, and his son Paul took on the pairing of Alan Dallas and Eamon Barkley.

Once again another very closely fought match, Alan and Eamon won the first 2 holes but a birdie from Paul at the third reduced the deficit to 1 hole. Eamon and Alan remained 1 up until a birdie from Charlie at the 10th brought it back to all square. A par at 11 put Alan and Eamon back in front and a par at the 16th for Paul and Charlie brought it back to all square. After 18 holes the match was all square and extra holes where required. The 19th hole was won by Charlie and Paul with a birdie three; this was the first time they had been in front all day.

Congratulations to all the winners of the major competitions, the prizes will be presented at the Major Prize night in October.
