Bann well placed to challenge for MUSA

The second round of the Mid-Ulster Senior Alliance was played last Monday at Lurgan.

Peter Hillen was the top scorer for Banbridge with 36 points. This was equal top score of the day. Peter would have been out on his own if he hadn’t inadvertently played off the wrong tee at one hole.

Seamus McGrath had an excellent 34. Seamus is the only Banbridge player to have a top four finish in the opening two rounds. John Parkes had 32 and Tony Ewbanks 31.

Those four gave Banbridge a very respectable team total of 133 points. The cards of Harry Shannon, Brian Mulholland, Dennis Lockhart and Andy Murphy didn’t count. It’s early days but Bann are in a strong position to challenge this year.

Lurgan and Ardglass lead with a two round total of 271 points. Downpatrick, Lisburn, Omagh and Tandragee all have 269 points. Spa have 264 and then comes Banbridge on 263.

Round three of the MUSA is at Lisburn on Monday 9 June. A good score there could easily lift Banbridge into the top three.

Dess Gregg Cup

Banbridge played Edenmore in the second leg of their first round match in the Des Gregg Veteran’s Cup last Thursday.

Edenmore had won the first leg 3-1 and were three holes up.

John Poots and John Parkes won their game three and two and finished five holes up to tighten the tie.

Brian Mulholland and Bobby Geddis won the last to get a half match and Banbridge were ahead on holes.

However, Dougie Stevenson, team captain, and Gerry Blevins, lost three and two and it was all over.
