Big hitter Alan takes plaudits at Dunmurry’s open week

Alan Irvine took the spoils on the final Saturday of yet another successful Open Week at Dunmurry Golf Club.

The big hitting 19 handicapper came home with a score of 43 pts to win the Stableford by a shot from young juvenile member Ryan Trimble.

Alan began bogey, par but failed to score at the third hole but pars at five, seven, eight and nine saw him amass 22 points over the front nine to put him well in contention.

A double bogey at 10 slowed him up as he followed it up with bogeys at his next three holes but a birdie at 14 got his round back on track once more. He picked up pars at 16 and 17 to come home with 43 point total.

Ryan Trimble (9) narrowly missed out to Alan after returning a fine 42 points in one of his first adult

competitions. Ryan reached the turn with 19 points, helped by pars at the third, fourth and seventh and a fine birdie at the second. He began his back nine with two further pars before making back to back birdies at 12 and 13. He gave those shots back at 15 and 17 but rounded off with a final hole birdie to storm home with 23 points for a 42 point total.

Roger Doherty (18) took home third prize with 41 points. He had a mixed bag through the front nine with pars at the second, third and seventh helping him to 17 points.

He began his back nine with a par at 10 but bogeyed 11 before making a double bogey on 12. He parred at 13 followed by a birdie at 14 and although he bogeyed 15, he finished strongly, parring the last three holes to register 41 point total.

Denis Sheridan (12) rounded out the scores in the 40s with his 40 points grabbing fourth spot. Denis made par at the first before picking up a birdie at the short third. He made double bogey at four but then parred the next four holes before bogeying the ninth to reach the turn with 21 points, finishing on 40 points.

Matthew Cochrane (4) took the best gross prize with a one over par 71. He began by running of a string of pars from the first to the sixth before back to back bogeys at seven and eight saw him to the turn at two over par. After pars at 10, 11 and 12 he made his first birdie of the day at 13 before giving the shot back again at 15, but a birdie at 17 saw him home in one under par for a one over par total.
