For one man however it was particularly memorable and John Crumlish (6) was that man, turning in a level par gross round for 42 points and his first major, an absolutely impeccable finish of two under for the last four holes was the icing on the cake.

His winner’s speech left no one in any doubt of his absolute delight in taking home this most prestigious prize. James Harrigan (17) was second but his 40 points set early in the day was leading for most of the day, two double bogeys cost him dearly but he was also very happy to figure so high on the prize list. Sean Quigg (1) had equal nines of 34 gross to take third place with 40 points, another great score for him. Vincent Devenney (11) currently enjoying a very good run in the club’s Ulster Cup squad took fourth place overall with a well compiled 39 points. Tommy McBride (5) won the category one section with 38 points, an impressive 21 of those points coming on his second nine. Michael Feeney (7), Stuart Gauld (12) and Martin Doherty (20) were best in their categories (7-11) 33 points, (12-17) 35 points and (18-28) 36 points bot respectively. Noel Kehoe (17) was the best of the veterans on 34 points and Danny Carlin (14) the Captain of Redcastle was best of the visitors with an undisclosed score. Brian Burn (17) won the non qualifiers score with 31 points.

In the Captain’s Scramble held on Friday evening the winning team were the Captain himself Michael McCullough aided and abetted by Eamon McCourt, Kealan Quigg and Deborah Doherty

Next Saturday’s competition is sponsored by Laois International Tourism and the winners will have an all expenses (accommodation and golf) trip to the Seve Ballesteros designed Heritage Golf Course. A ladies competition will also be on the programme.

While ten handicapper Bean Simpson was the clear winner of the weekly Thursday Open at Prehen with a superbly compiled 42 points, a model of consistency with 21 points on each nine. The previous evening he caddied for his son Robert who was playing in the Club Championship and obviously picked up a few useful tips that he used to great effect in his winning round. Gary Cummings (16) took second place with his 39 points that included two blanks and needed a tie break in his favour, a welcome return to form for young Gary who has just resumed playing after a long break. John Flynn (13) maintained his run of good form with his 39 and third spot. Best gross went to Jayson McIntyre (4) on 33 points and the visitor’s prize was won with 34 points by Colm McCarroll (9) from North West.

The Thursday Opens continue on a weekly basis right through to October. The club also run a meal deal every Wednesday for £13.
