Birdie brilliance for Fergal in Winter League

There was an excellent entry of 130 for the first round of the Lisburn Winter League at the local golf club and none played better than Fergal McDonnell.

Following the recent good spell of weather the course was in excellent condition and Fergal took full advantage, going round the front nine in 42 shots for 24 points off his 24 handicap.

His putter was red hot as he rattled in birdie putts on the short sixth and the ninth. This made him a clear winner of Section Three.

To cap a fine day, Fergal was one of only eight competitors to register a birdie two.

John Patterson (25) was second with 21 followed by Hubert Shellard (22) on 20.

Colin Smyth (15) topped Section Two with 21 points. Philip Morton (18) and Martin Blakely (14) were one point in arrears with Philip’s par five at the eighth giving him the edge on count back.

David Scott (12) finished with a birdie three to clinch Section One with 22 points. Mark Jamison (8) Matt Lyness (4) and Bryan Heatherington (6) scored 20 points with Mark’s better finish of level par for the last six holes claiming second place ahead of Matt.

Bryan and Martin Lilley both scored two eagle threes at the first hole.
