Break of tie win for Pearson at Prehen

CITY of Derry members and visitors from all the the other regional clubs and further afield will be delighted to learn of a fabulous two day Open team event taking place at City of Derry on the weekend of August 25/26.

Sponsored by local accountancy firm Moore, McDaid and McCullough, the format will be teams of four for ladies and gents (any combination) and demand for places is sure to be keen.

George Pearson (23) took the main honours at Prehen on Sunday with a sparkling 43 points for a tie breaking victory in the Captain’s Charity Open.

Suki Nagra (15) also had 43 points but just couldn’t match George’s fabulous 25 point back nine which proved to be the clincher. Suki did however move up the rankings for a possible place in the “dream team” in the two day event to be held at Prehen on the weekend of 25/26 August.

Bernard McDaid (20) finished in third place with an excellent 42 points and Ernie Heywood (1) took the gross prize with 36 points. Best of the ladies was Christine Mitchell (27) on 37 points followed home by Marie Clifford (24) on 35 points

While eight handicapper Aubrey Taylor made a very welcome return to the winner’s circle at Prehen on Saturday when taking first place in the Northern Bank sponsored Open Stableford.

Six over level twos after 16 holes he had a slight wobble with a nasty double bogey at the 17th but recovered well with a par at the last and his 41 points proved to be the best of the day.

Ryan Kerr (16) also took a six at the 17th but still had 40 points and finished in second place. Michael Feeney (8) scored 39 points with 22 of them on the back nine to take the third place and the fourth place was taken by Graham Robb (7) who was best of six players on 38 points with no less than 16 of those points coming on the last six holes. Sean Quigg (1) was the winner of the gross prize on 37 points.

While James Desmond (16) continued his run of good form with another Thursday Open win at Prehen, recording 40 points in the process and that despite dropping four shots over the last three holes.

Ralph Hamilton (13) took the runner up place on 39 points. Letterkenny man Keith Hegarty (17) took third place on 38 points courtesy of a tie break. The visitor’s prize went to a great supporter of the weekly Thursday Opens Brian Wallace (8) playing out of Dunfanaghy.

While Mrs Betty McBride’s Lady Captain’s Day, which took place at City of Derry, on Friday was won by Rose Campbell (15) after she scored 70 points.

Second spot went to Ciara Quigg (16) after she scored 71 points and Vivienne Houston (7) with 72 points claimed third spot.

The Category one was claimed by Ann Wallace (19) after she scored 73 points, Pamela Rutherford (22) with 73 points won the Category two section and Florence Walker(29) with 78 points secured the category three prize.

The Committee Prize went to Cheryl Chambers (20) after she scored 77 points and Naoimh Quigg (3) with 78 points won the past captain’s prize.

The 13 Hole Stableford Visitor’s prize was won by Helen Jones (2) after she scored 25. Nearest the pin was Rose Campbell and Naoimh Quigg hit the Longest Drive.

The Men’s 13 hole three club challenge was won by Edward Maxwell after he scored 25 points, Maurice McCarter with 23 points was second and the Juvenile boy’s section was won by Christopher Love, Adam Monaghan was second and Luke Hasson finished third.

The ladies Victory Cup Stableford competition last Tuesday was claimed by Kate O’Doherty (36) after she scored 30 points, second was Christine Mitchell (27) after she finished with 28 points and Pat Coull (21) with 26 points was third. The CSS was 75 reduction only.
