Brian has the winning sweep card

Last week the entries to the Wednesday Sweep were on the 76 mark. Play was from forward tees and the scoring was accordingly slightly higher. Some 20 golfers achieved returns of 37 points or better.

The overall winner was Brian Bassett with a handsome total of 42 points. Playing off a 20 handicap Brian was quickly into his stride with valuable pars at holes one, two and five. He rounded off the front nine with a birdie at the eighth and a par on the ninth. Further pars were attained at holes ten and twelve. However double bogeys on holes fifteen and sixteen and a no-return at the penultimate hole did not embellish his good scoring. On the day a string of net pars enabled him to capture the first net prize.

Runner-up was Andrew Gates with his steady return of 41 points. This eight handicap golfer was relatively successful over both of the nines.

Whilst he racked up bogeys on holes two, three and eight on the outward nine, he countered them with five pars and a birdie on the seventh. His back nine began with a birdie on the tenth. The remaining eight holes comprised six pars to go alongside bogeys on holes fifteen and sixteen. It was a close call as he required a better score on the closing three holes to nudge him ahead on the finishing line.

With a similar haul of 41 points Terence Eagers grabbed third place. This eighteen handicapper was best served by a birdie at the tenth and par figures at holes one, four, eight and thirteen. A double bogey at the sixth was his only major blip on the day. Net pars on the rest of the holes helped him to this five under par effort.

The fourth and final net prize was taken by Daniel Wright with a score of 40 points. The eight handicapper opened his account with a birdie at the first. Although he took bogeys on holes two, three and eight he managed pars on the other five holes. His solid back nine included seven pars to accompany bogeys on holes fifteen and seventeen. This sufficed to put him among the winners.

The gross prize went to Francie Tallon. The two handicapper triumphed with an useful 37 gross points. Early on he fell foul of bogeys on holes four and eight. He made amends later on with birdies on holes ten, eleven and eighteen. Pars were his lot on the remaining holes.
