Candlish wins latest round of Winter League at Galgorm

The Winter League and Sweep sponsored by McAllisters Butchers, Broughshane continued at Galgorm Castle Golf Club.

Through The Maple in Division 1 Gary McWilliams (3) held a one point advantage over Neil Candlish (3) and Owen Smith (3) with Gary Boyd (5) another point behind.

With two holes to play Candlish was the new leader. McWilliams, Smith and Boyd were at one point intervals respectively behind. Candlish with two pars increased his lead to win by two points from McWilliams(bogey, par), Smith (two pars) and Boyd (par, birdie) who finished together. Boyd with a better back six finished in second place with third place going to Smith (better back six).

Brian Heggarty (7) set the pace in Division 2 and after the opening four holes led by three points from Des Cousley (7) followed by Neil Fitzsimmons (6) and Gary Hood (7) another point behind. Trevor Todd (7) was another point down at this stage.

Heggarty increased his lead to four points over the next three holes from Cousley with Fitzsimmons, Hood and an improving Todd another two points behind. Heggarty finished double bogey, bogey for a comfortable three point victory from Cousley (double bogey, par) in second. Fitzsimmons (bogey, par), Hood (par, bogey) and Todd (bogey, par) were another point behind and with a better back three third place went to Fitzsimmons.

In Division 3 Trevor Fletcher (9) opened up a four point gap over Terence Martin (8), Raymond Steele (8), John Carruthers (9) and Ivan McCappin (9). Raymond Lynn (9) was another point behind.

Fletcher continued to lead for the remainder of the round and finished with a double bogey to win by three points.

‘Dings’ probably played an integral part in the placings as Martin with two bogeys emerged to take second place with McCappin (bogey, ‘ding’), Steele (‘ding’, par), Carruthers (double bogey, bogey) and Lynn (two bogeys) finished together. Lynn claimed third position with a better back three.

Colin Black (11) led Colin Thompson (11) by one point in Division 4 through thirteen. A further point behind came Tony Dodds (11) and James Rea (14).

Black lost his lead after two ‘dings’ with Dodds taking advantage with the help of two pars to open a two point lead over Thompson and Rea with two to play. Dodds held on to his lead with a two bogey finish to win by one point from Thompson (par, bogey). Rea took third place.

Twos were recorded by: M Alexander (x2), J Smyth, D Bamford, N Candlish, P Galloway, G Watt, M Burton, M McIlroy and D Millar.

FRONT NINE

In a close finish Graham Simms (bogey, par) was joined by Reginald Marks (bogey, birdie) and Campbell McAnally (two pars).

With a better back six R.Marks won from McAnally (better back six) in second and long time leader Simms in third place.
