Captain fantastic! Great day for Gary at Edenmore

LAST Saturday was a peach of a day and probably one of the best Saturday’s golfers at Edenmore Golf Club have had all year.

You couldn’t have picked a better day for the September monthly medal stroke play competition. So with conditions good overhead and a little run on the course after a great week’s weather, now that the kids are back to school everything was set for some dad to have a good round, but it was to be the best round of Edenmore Captain Gary Watson’s life.

Gary had had a good round earlier on in the week when he won the George Nicholson memorial trophy at the committee away day held at Rockmount and he was happy with his 39 pts. So Gary was on form but even he could not have considered a nett 59 was in his grasp. But yes that’s what he pulled out of the bag. Gary didn’t have the best front nine and but playing off his 13 handicap and coming off the ninth with two birdies under his belt and just three over gross he was chuffed and on track for a good score if he kept it going. His back nine was to be something different starting off with three pars before his first birdie on the thirteenth. He then went on to score four more pars before a final birdie on the eighteenth which closed a back nine off with a score of two under gross and a round that finished up just one over gross and 12 under his handicap. Well he lost three shots off his handicap and now plays off 10. Well done Mr Captain.

Section two (14-18) handicap was won by Brian Rice with another excellent nett 66 and chased home by Tom Crooks just one adrift on his nett 67. Garry Brown took third spot with a nett 68.

Section three (19-22) handicap was won by William Nesbitt also on a nett 66. David McEwen too second with his nett 67 and Jim McNeill lost the countback to take third also on a nett 67

In the Monday Seniors Pete Foers scored 38 Pts to claim victory over Jackie Gilliland with 37 Pts. Jackie just beat John Stanage on countback also on 37 pts.

In the ladies monthly medal Heather Patterson won with a nett 71 just beating Karen Legrand on countback also on 71. Margaret Robinson was just two shots adrift on nett 73.

At the end of the season the men’s club play a few fun yet serious matches with a lot of pride at stake. The Men’s committee play the ladies committee each year and the atmosphere is always electric. The men’s club had never been beaten but things were to change this year. The format was five teams fourball better ball and with two matches all everything went down to the last match out on the course which tied on the eighteenth hole. So down the first went Lady Captain Heather Patterson and Lady Vice Edith Watson along with Heather’s husband Alan and Jim Price. The only explanation for the men losing was Alan probably succumbing to some matrimonial duress from the Lady Captain. The men will never hear the end of it for at least a year.

Another Match was the annual adult’s versus the juvenile’s match. This also is a keenly fought competition with the juveniles always keen to get one over on the men. This year was to be no different except the result was somewhat of a shock for the men with the juveniles winning 4 ½ to a ½ for the adults.

The men’s committee go away each year for a day and compete for the George Nicholson Memorial trophy and this year for the second time by Captain Gary Watson won with 39pts followed in by Club President Bobby Cosgrove on 37pts and third place went to Gerry McClory with 35 pts. A great day was had by all and thanks to Rockmount for looking after everyone so well.
