Captain Noel McSherry wins Mizuno with round of the year

Club captain, Noel McSherry, won the Mizuno last Saturday and he is congratulated by Carole Quinn and Maeve Fee.

Last Saturday was the popular Mizuno Day when close to 200 players competed for the Eamon Magee Memorial Trophy and a superb array of prizes.

Who do you think won? None other than Noel McSherry, with the best round of the season so far.

Noel, playing off a 15 handicap, went round in 73 gross, 4 over par, and that gave him an incredible nett 58. He won the competition by 3 shots. How brilliant is that?

Noel started his round superbly and was 2 under par after 4 holes. He didn’t get over excited. He just continued to play one good shot after another and it all added up to that amazing nett 58. Noel is now down to 12 handicap but he won’t mind that. You couldn’t have scripted a better story.

Gordon Enderson (24 now 21) was runner-up with a nett 61. That would win nine times out of ten. Gordon won’t be too disappointed when he sees who has won.

Gareth Matthews (12 now 11) was third with another nett 61. This is one talented young player. His dad is so proud of him. Aren’t you, Jim?

Damian Weir (5) won the best gross with a level par 69. Your late uncle Eamon would be so pleased for you, Damian.

Dermot Magee (19 now 18) won the prize for the best senior.

There was a glut of good scores. 21 players beat the calculated standard scratch score of nett 67 and 14 equalled it. We will mention a few.

Eamon McAnarney (13) had a nett 61.

Peter Cruikshanks (15) had a nett 63.

Kevin McKay (12), David McComb (11), Gareth Magee (7) and Brian Boyd (14) all had nett 64’s.

Shane Crossan (15), John McGowan (26), Kerry McCluskey (8), James Wilson (17), Mark McCoy (7) and Richard Coburn (15) all finished with nett 65.

Good as they were, all these scores paled into insignificance when compared to the Captain’s sensational nett 58. What a story.
