Carpenter is a cut above the rest with 39 points

On Wednesday the gents were competing for the Johnston Trophy at Lurgan.

When the scores were assessed it was Mark Carpenter who prevailed with his effort of 39 points. This twelve handicapper played quite solidly over both nines. He had a glorious start with an eagle two at the first and followed that with useful pars at holes two, three, five and six. On the back nine he birdied the thirteenth. Pars figures at holes eleven, twelve and seventeen consolidated this winning round.

Remarkably he lost five shots over holes eight and nine and this probably deprived him off a higher point total.

Second spot went to John Hartnett with his round of 39 points. Playing off an eleven handicap John kept mistakes to a minimum. A quartet of pars at holes one, three, four and seven were his opening nine highlights. Birdies at holes ten and thirteen pointed the way on the back nine. A steady run of pars at holes fifteen, sixteen and seventeen were his other notable scores. Perhaps a no-return on the eighteenth proved costly.

The third net prize went to Rodger McIlwaine with the final tally of 39 points. A double bogey on the twelfth was his only wayward hole. Pars at holes two, three, four and eight were his early successes.

Meanwhile he started the inward nine vigorously with a birdie on the tenth and pars at holes thirteen and fourteen. Back to back pars on holes sixteen and seventeen were his other significant returns.

In the gross domain David Sutton was the form horse. This plus two handicapper won with 38 gross points.

A score of 38 points put Nathan McCann in fourth place.
