Casey has point to spare in Galgorm win

At the halfway stage in the Robinson’s Costcutter sponsored Stableford played at Galgorm Castle Golf Club, David Burns, playing off six, held a very slender one point advantage with a group of five players – Damien Casey (21), Adrian McCart (10), Wilson McVeigh (8), Peter Daly (7) anD George Small (9) - breathing down his neck.

Through 13, Small had moved into a two point lead after a birdie and three pars followed by Casey, Burns and Daly.

‘Dings’ played a big part over the next three holes with McVeigh and Daly failing to register at Beechers and Burns at the next So with two to play Casey joined Small to lead by one point from McCart with Burns another point behind followed by McVeigh and Daly a further point down.

Small was still joint leader with one to play but a ‘ding’ at the last put paid to his chance of victory.

Casey came home bogey, par for overall victory by one point from McCart (two pars). Burns finished with two pars to take Division 1 by one point. Daly (two pars), McVeigh (two pars) and Small finished together and with a better back six McVeigh took second place with Daly

(better back six) third.

Philip Smyth (14) held a two point advantage through the front nine in Division 2. Owen Smith (15), George Watt (13) and Darryl Robinson (13) came next with Peter Stewart (11) and Bryan Logan (11) one and two points respectively further behind.

Approaching 14, P Smyth had slipped to three points behind the joint leaders – O Smith and Robinson. A point behind the leaders came Logan with Stewart two more points down followed by Watt another point away.

O Smith, Logan and Robinson ‘dinged’ 14 and with two left to play, P Smyth and Robinson led Logan and Watt by a point. Stewart and O.Smith were another one and two points respectively further behind.

‘Dings’played an important part over the closing two holes when P Smyth and Watt ‘dinged’ the last with Robinson having a ‘ding’ at the penultimate hole.

O Smith with a two par finish joined P Smith and with a better back nine O.Smith took first place with P.Smyth in second. Robinson, Stewart (bogey, par), Logan (two bogeys) and Watt finished together and with a better back nine Logan took the third place.

In Division 3 at the turn Gerard Lynn (17) was one point ahead of Graham Simms (16). Two, three and four points further behind came James Graham (18), Austin McGillion (19) and James McAuley respectively.

Lynn was still ahead through 13 by two points from Simms and a much improved McGillion.

Simms joined Lynn at 16 after a ‘ding’ by Lynn. Disaster struck Lynn again when he ‘dinged’ the last after a double bogey in the Lowlands.

McGillion took advantage of theses slips and with a bogey, bogey finish took second place two points behind Simms (two bogeys). Lynn held on for third place one point ahead of McAuley (par, bogey) and Graham (two bogeys)

Division 4 proved a facile victory for Jack Douglas (20). Leading by four points entering the back nine from Norman Nicholl (23), Trevor Galloway (28) and Tony Quinn (20) with William Kennedy (23) another point away Douglas led throughout the back nine and came home to win after a ‘ding’ at 17 by three points from Nicholl and Kennedy who finished together and with a better back nine Kennedy finished in second place with Nicholl third.

David Stirling Jnr (6) won the Gross Prize with Bernie Frayne (20) winning the Seniors prize.
