Cassidy wins Captain's Day at Prehen

STANDING on the tee at 7.15am to wish the first of his members good fortune playing for his Captain's Prize, Mr Brian Abel was just a tad apprehensive as the clouds darkened and the wind rose. But the Captain needn't have worry as the clouds cleared to yet another brilliant day at Prehen.

By the end of play a huge field was topped by Mr Peter Cassidy (15) with a fabulous 42 points which showed that any tricky wind can be tamed if you have steely reserves of concentration, a hot putter and friends willing you on to do well.

A clutch of players tried hard to catch peter but all came up just short and tied on 40 points for the other top prizes. Big hitting Gavin Morren (19) needed a better back nine to take second spot from David Bratton (18) who needed a better back six to take third form Andy McFaul (9).

Prehen's Mr Steady Ernie Heywood (1) put in another neatly compiled performance to lift the gross prize with 34 points. The first nine was taken by Mr Eamon McCourt (9) with 21 points and the back nine was taken by Ardmore's Player of the Season Patsy Gallagher (25) with 21 points.

Keith Stott (11) lifted the Category 6-12 prize with 38 points, Noel Kehoe (15) skipped to the podium to collect the Category 13-17 crystal after scoring 38 points and Eagar Walker(26) was prised from his fire-side seat to raise the glassware for the Category 18-28 section with 37 points.

A special round of applause was evident when the Veteran's Prize was announced as having been won by past competition convenor, Neil Alcock (12) with 37 points.

It's always a pleasure to hear of that special shot that every golfer either dreams of playing or talks endlessly of having played! Eddie McMenemin now has his chance to regale the Prehen members for the next few years about how he aced Par Three Quarry on Captain's Day. Eddie has promised that every person he tells the story to will receive a celebratory glass of a suitable liquid refreshment!

In his closing remarks the Captain, Mr Brian Abel, thanked his council, the Ladies Branch and the members for their support during his year of office and looked forward to the many great events being planned as City of Derry Golf Club looks forward to its 2012 Centenary Celebrations.

Captain Abel closed with special thanks to his parents and family for their very special help over many years.

It was a smaller field that made it to the first tee on Sunday at Prehen after the somewhat extended festivities of Mr Brian Abel's Captain's Day. The weather soon blew away any sort heads with a gale force wind the order of the day.

Two handicapper Lester Moore proved the pick of the hardy few with a superb 37 points to demonstrate that constant practice does eventually pay off! Peter McMahon(28) took second place with a fabulously compiled 35 points.
