Castlerock medal win for Clarke

Eighteen handicap Clarke Telford hit form on Saturday to score a net 69 to lift first prize in the Monthly Medal on countback.

Clarke had a steady front nine of six over par 42 and carried this form into the back nine. Although he had a couple of double bogies coming back he also slipped in a good birdie four at the long eleventh to end the second nine in 45 shots for a gross 87 which nets down to the winning 69.

Karl Stewart was the man who suffered from the countback process. The eleven handicapper matched Clarke’s net 69 but narrowly missed out on the top slot. Karl had bagged tow birdies on the outward nine, a three at the second and a four at the long Railway hole, to be out in 38 shots. Another birdie came his way at eleven with a four but this was the last.

Karl came back in 40 shots and lost out on a last six tie break. Fresh from his good showing in the NE Alliance it was Gilbert Fallows who won the High Section award for his 72 net off thirteen. He was out in 43 and came back in 42 with a birdie four at twelve helping. Twelve man Ian Calderwood carded a net 70 to claim the Low Section. His back nine of 37 included birdies at the twelfth and a two at sixteen. Senior Table Topper was Tom Cunningham with his offering of 73 net.

Tom was also on the birdie trail with a four at the Railway and a good two at the ninth to be out in 41 shots. He came back in 42 without the aid of birdies and when his eleven handicap was taken off he signed for a net 73.

David Turner finished on level par to take the Gross Prize. His three three start put him two under immediately and he went further into red figures with a four at the Railway and another birdie three at the sixth. Three bogies ended the front nine though, which left David one under par. His bogey five at the last hole was his only departure from par golf in a back nine of 38 shots to get him home in 73.
