But he had to rely upon his back nine to see off runner-up James McBride, who also returned the same total.

McCooke, off a 13 handicap, opened his round with three bogeys but then added four pars and a birdie at the eighth before rounding off his front nine with another bogey for 21 points.

The second nine contained six pars plus dropped shots on the 11th and 15th and despite dropping a shot on the last hole, his total of 22 points on the inward nine was one point ahead of second-placed McBride.

The 12-handicapper made a solid start with seven pars and two bogeys on the opening nine holes for 22 points and he added a further 21 on the second nine, which included a birdie at the 17th.

Third nett was Glenn Millar who, having a shot on handicap at each hole, posted a total of 42 points and here, again, a better second nine was the deciding factor.

After an opening nine holes which yielded 20 points, he added a further 22 to push Ivor Cunningham (27) into fourth position on countback.

The high-handicapper had put himself in a good position by amassing 25 points from an opening nine which included four pars but he was not able to match that standard after the turn, as he could only add a further 17 points.

Fifth-placed Denis Stewart was another player who excelled over the opening nine holes, where he notched 23 points. His second nine was played to his 18 handicap where, despite a ‘ding’ at the 12th, he managed 18 points for the nine holes.

The final nett prize went to David Crockard (15) who recorded 40 points, with 21 of them coming on the homeward nine which included five bogeys and four pars.

Best gross went to John A Jamieson (5) who was one under par on the outward nine and four over par on the way back.

He had six shots to spare over John Robinson (2) who, after an opening round of 69, suffered a triple bogey at the last hole in his second round.

Played in conjunction with the Cameron Cup was an open stroke competition won by Nigel Thompson with a nett 63.
